Character

Name: Kaoru Lin
Age: 22
Birthday: October 22
Country of origin: USA (California)

Reason for flight: Two week field school studying native Australia flora

Personality: Kaoru can be easily dismissed as nothing more than a dick who revels in his own cleverness. This is probably the smart thing to do; he is intelligent and both knows this fact and is proud of it, his vanity streak is incredibly long, he finds a lot of entertainment in annoying people to see how they react, and is a giant grumpy bear. Those that don’t dismiss him out of hand or are stuck around him for long periods of time out of necessity and not choice find out that he is all bark and no bite. He is just as likely to be helpful or generous if needed, does his best to support people and institutions he’s emotionally invested into, is a pretty good tutor/teacher, and generally doesn’t mean most of the shit he says seriously.

Most of his childhood was the quiet nerdy one that lived in the shadows of his more popular twin brother (Naoki) and older sister (Ayame) and the distant but no less impressive half-siblings from his father’s previous marriage (Minami and Yuuta), which is something that he initially resented until, after years of being Naoki’s confident and trying to protect his sister from the ravages of the gossip mill, he realized that popularity was not all that it was cracked up to be. Even so, it was difficult being Naoki’s Nerdy Twin Brother What Was His Name Again. Four years of college away from home has allowed him time to settle in as Kaoru and learn who that is on his own merits and not in comparison to his brighter siblings.

Appearance: Kaoru looks striking, although it doesn’t always translate from striking to attractive. His features are strong and nearly feminine, but not enough that he could ever claim to actually look feminine or even androgynous in truth. Naoki was always more apt to take advantage of his appearance than Kaoru, and as a result Kaoru remains more focused on attracting people in through his wits than his pretty face. While he is tall (at 5'11) and lanky, he is more solidly built than Naoki after years of field schools and weekend hiking trips.

He spent many of his teenage years trying to find ways to differentiate himself from his brother, which means that he looks back at his pictures from high school in horror and wonders where Ayame was when he needed her most (and then remembers her trying and him going YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND ME and her telling him that he will regret it!!). Now that he doesn’t have to bother, he’s settled into looking boring. His hair is kept long enough to cover his ears and left black, most of his wardrobe is either stolen from Naoki’s closet, from his parents in their efforts to spoil him when he returns home between semesters, or because Ayame, or Minami in the rare times she’s around, were bored and needed a new project.

PB: Aiba Masaki

History: His parents were expecting a boy and girl set of twins, which meant that as the second by an hour (which translates to a day because his mother had Naoki at 11:30 PM and him at 12:30AM), Kaoru was the surprise boy of the family. He thinks that this has set the pattern on the rest of his life, which his parents protest because they split all the blue and pink between the two evenly and it’s difficult to tell who was who in the pictures when Ayame used to dress them in the frilly girly clothing when she was bored with her dolls.

Kaoru was the quiet member of a loud and exuberant family, more likely to wait for attention than to reach out for it. This went about as well as expected; he was never truly ignored and never wanted for anything that he needed, but attention is naturally drawn to those who demand it like his brother and sister did. Instead, he hid in corners and niches and read. By high school, after years of advanced placement classes and being known as Naoki’s Nerdy Twin Brother, Kaoru was near resentful of the fact his siblings were popular and beloved and he was the one people went to in order to cheat on their homework.

He had his own friends, of course, who were the types that loudly proclaimed how they weren’t “sheeple” and weren’t shallow enough to consider being part of the cool kids as the most important thing ever, while still bitter over the fact they weren’t part of the in-group. It put him in an awkward position, because on one hand he was the same as them in both the bitter and the opinions, but on the other hand, part of their vitriol was aimed at his siblings. No matter how resentful he got, he couldn’t dismiss them. He couldn’t call his sister a vapid, shallow whore of a cheerleader when she was always there for him and, every few months, they’d make two pots of coffee and talk an entire night about nothing in particular or when he saw how hard she worked for her spot on the cheerleading squad and how hard they practiced. He couldn’t call his brother an arrogant twit when it was his twin brother, the person that was always there for him and Kaoru could trust with everything in his life and not be betrayed. He especially couldn’t when his brother admitted that it was difficult to be the stupid brother and have to deal with teachers watching and judging as he struggled over problems that Kaoru could have solved in his sleep two years earlier.

It was a relief to graduate high school. Kaoru was going to UC Berkeley, which was in the same state but far enough away from where he grew up that he figured he had a chance of shedding the skin of Naoki’s Nerdy Twin and becoming Kaoru Lin in truth. It didn’t happen immediately – even without Naoki around, Kaoru was often sullen and grumpy by nature, which didn’t lend well to making a good impression on strangers and making friends. It wasn’t until his second semester, where he was assigned a roommate he was able to get along with when his first one dropped out of school, that he started to make friends and find a place for himself.

Things are going well for Kaoru now, although it’s difficult to believe that with his current week of hell. He’s preparing for a field school that his senior thesis is dependent on, but the credits aren’t showing and his loan is late sending the payment to go to the field school, which is bad enough, but he was dumped by his girlfriend on top of it and spent the night before his flight to Australia getting nice and drunk and would have missed the flight entirely if Naoki hadn’t thought to call him before he left. Deciding that comfort on an international flight was more important than making a good first impression and his head hurt too much to think about clothing, Kaoru went with his favorite Oscar the Grouch pajama pants and a navy blue Cal hoodie.

In retrospect, this was a mistake.

Special skills: He is an Integrated Biology major with a focus on ecology, which means he understands a lot about plants and identifications thereof and has spent a lot of time outdoors. Not, you know, without modern camping supplies but he at least knows how to cook on a campfire.

Strengths: Not prone to panic or anger, quick learner, observant, can as easily lead as he can follow if required

Weaknesses: has never camped Bear Gryllis style, physically weak, enjoys his creature comforts, is a giant grumpy bear, no one can take a man in Oscar the Grouch pajama pants seriously

Misc: Chinese-Japanese American, speaks enough (bad) Chinese and (bad) Japanese that he can figure out where he’s going and order food. Fluent in Latin.

Inventory: Oscar the Grouch pajama pants, blue Cal hoodie, white t-shirt, socks, boxers (cookie monster), sneakers, water-proof backpack (with an iPad, cell phone, DSi, chargers for all electronic things, two notebooks half filled with notes and two notebooks that are free of writing, advil, passport), a wallet with $50 in cash, credit cards, keychain with both keys and random keychain charms (mushroom from Mario, generic vine-thing, a bulbasaur)
